The Fort Drum Connector Clearing Project is a New York State Department of Transportation Region 7 Project that involves specifically site preparation (Clearing) for the Fort Drum Connector Corridor I-781 in the towns of Pamelia and Leray. The intent of NYSDOT was to set up an engineer’s office, survey the right of way, stake out pertinent items (row, wetlands, and bat forests), clear vegetation, and environmentally stabilize the site prior to the main bid for a variety of reasons. In this region of New York State there are restrictions on when land can be cleared due to a protected species known as the Indiana Bat. These restrictions require trees to be forested during the winter months. Also by clearing and surveying the site as a separate contract it allows contractors and DOT personal to view and explore the right of way without and impeded view before the main project is bid and having frost in the ground will reduce the environmental impacts of clearing a large acreage site. Major project components include clearing of approximately 5 miles of right of way, installation of 6500 linear meters of vegetative protective fencing, and the installation of erosion control measures.
